There is no set amount of time that a baby needs to sleep in a bassinet.

Some babies will sleep for 8 hours straight, others may only doze off now and then.

The best way to determine how long your child should be sleeping in the bassinet is by seeing what they are doing.

If you notice that they are getting tired after being awake for an hour or two then it would be wise to put them back into their crib or cot so that they can get some restful sleep.

This blog post is dedicated to help you know how long does a baby sleep in a bassinet to plan sleeping habits accordingly.

What is a bassinet?

It is a small bed for babies, with sides high enough to support the baby’s head. Babies continue to spend much of the early months in the bassinet before graduating to a crib.

A bassinet is also defined as a cradle with high sides that is often used for very young infants.

There are different kinds of bassinets, some designed to attach to the parents’ bed and others with wheels so they can be moved around the house.

Benefits of bassinet

1. Comfort

This is the comfort of your baby, during sleep in his bassinet can bow slightly forward to relieve neck pressure and maximize his comfort.

It will be easier for the parents to carry the bassinet around, compared with a full size crib. The big crib can be heavy and also very bulky for most people especially if you are living in an apartment or condo, where there’s no need of moving it around often with many stairs needed.

2. Healthy

A lot of studies showed that sleeping in a plain surface like wood or metal increases risk on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) when compared within cloth based surfaces. This is not only healthier but also safer for the baby and the parents.

3. Less Expensive

The big crib can cost much more when compared with a smaller bassinet, where the baby will only spend much time in it during his first six months or so. And if you are expecting another child soon after your first one, the cost to buy another bassinet is not that high when compared with buying a full-size crib for your second one.

Full size cribs are known to be safer than smaller ones, but having no evidence of any bad effect for using a smaller crib does prove that there is nothing wrong in using it at all! Not only that even in some cases it proves to be beneficial. There’s no harm out somethings new as long it doesn’t affect the baby in any way.

5. Versatile

Used not only for sleeping but also containing most of his stuffs, let’s say..Toys, baby bottle(s), diapers, clothes and all!

This is a big advantage when compared with what most people do, they end up buying another thing called dresser to store these stuffs. Now this extra piece will cost you more money along the line if you are planning on buying many different things for your baby.

6.  Traveling friendly – A friend of mine who was asked me to name 5 amazing features of my article said that using an infant bassinet is very practical while traveling because it can easily fit in your car and you can use it immediately when you get to your hotel room.

7. Easier to clean – Because of its small size, there’s no need for you to get a very big cloth just so that it can cover the whole area of the bassinet. This will help cleaning up much easier since the cloth is smaller that what you would have used if it were a big crib.

The chance of spreading germs through bacteria is much easier when you are using a big size cloth.

8. It’s light weight

The big crib can be very heavy, especially if the full size one(which was built to last so many years) but it may also put pressure on parents who will also carry it up and down the stairs too much or even taking them outside during trips or travelings  . This is not only tiring but could also cause injuries if done too often without proper precautions.

9. Can use as playpen

If you don’t mind having an extra thing in your house, this bassinet can be used as a playpen for your baby where he can start learning how to crawl and walk. Just like a high chair, this can be used as a playpen where you put your baby and he’ll start playing on his own (/start learning to crawl and walk).

10. Can use it as a great storage place once the baby becomes 18~24 months old – As the baby starts growing, there’s no need for him to sleep all day long in his little bassinet anymore. It can now become more than just a sleeping space for him but also another storage place where you can keep toys, clothing items and even some of his snacks! He can now enjoy more time playing with them instead of sleeping all day long.

How to assemble the bassinet?

1. First of all, do not forget to remove the sticker on the bottom of the bassinet that prevents it from moving during shipping. Remove them with a dry cloth or knife and move your bassinet into place.

2. Install the screws and tighten them properly, use a screwdriver (do not over-tighten). The bassinet can be assembled without using any tool – some users prefer to use their feet as you can see on some pictures below 🙂

3. After assembling the bassinet you need to fix it in position so it will not fall out if it is moved by mistake.

To do this we provide special fastening under which consist of two metal bars and some plastic pegs that serve as brackets for these bars. Use them for this purpose.

4. You can use a lock to prevent accidental opening of the bassinet. To do this, you need to screw in one of the bolts from under the fastening with a lock and tighten it firmly – after that your bassinet is locked and cannot be opened without using special tools (screwdriver or drill).

5. Next install a mattress support which will provide stability during sleep for your baby by increasing surface area of the sleeping surface and increasing firmness of mattress support.

This mattress support will also help to increase air circulation through holes underneath it avoiding baby overheating at night time – especially useful if you are planning to put heated pad beneath bassinet’s mattress or bath sponge.

Make sure there are two holes facing down or place a piece of sponge there to avoid mattress from getting wet.

6. Install sheets as you wish! It is usually easier to change them during night time without the need to remove the baby out of the bassinet.

Make sure they are not too loose – it can be hard to change a diaper with a sheet that is moving around all over the place.

It is better if there’s enough space for a hand between a sheet and baby but not too much space as it may cause overheating at night time.

Some users put empty plastic bottles filled with water under mattress support – this makes activity mats more firm for your child so it doesn’t move around so much while lying on it, especially if your baby is not an infant anymore (toddler) but still like to sleep in activity mat.

Also you can put a heating pad under sheets if the bassinet was provided with a special opening for it.

If there’s no hole, make one by hand or drill – don’t forget to leave space around the heating pad for air circulation (it should be placed on top of mattress support).

7. It is strongly recommended to use our covers!

8. Your bassinet is almost ready, now it’s time to install mobile(s).

To do this, please read the instructions from your mobile seller as it is different for every model.

In short: Use a screwdriver or drill to make a hole in plastic cap of each mobile, then use a small screw that should come with the mobile and tighten them firmly.

9. Put a blanket on your bassinet top and voila! Your bassinet is ready 🙂

How long does a baby sleep in a bassinet?

Different sources have different opinions about the question “how long should a baby sleep in a bassinet?”. It’s important to know that every baby is different. Everyone sleeps differently.

So, there are no fixed rules for how long babies need to sleep in their beds. Babies develop at their own pace and according to their needs.

Some may want or need more rest than others. Every parent wants to take care of his/her newborn as best as possible, which means making sure that the child gets all the rest he/she needs, but this can be difficult when it comes time for bedtime.

It depends on the baby. Some people keep their babies in bassinets until they are one-year-old, others use them for a few months only.

In any case, it is not recommended to keep your baby inside a bassinet longer than four or five months of age because this could make him/her feel insecure and uncomfortable after he/she gets out of it.

We don’t know the exact time frame during which babies stay in their bassinets, but we do know that this will depend on their age and how they feel while sleeping there.

It can be said that “every baby has his/her own rhythm”, so you should avoid following rules of thumb when it comes to something like this one.

Tips for keeping your baby safe in the bassinet

Bassinets are a popular choice for parents because they’re widely available, easy to use and safe.

However, it’s important to know that bassinets should only be used for babies up to about four months old – instead of a crib – because they don’t meet the same strict safety standards as cribs or playpens.

This is why it’s important to follow these tips when using your infant’s bassinet:

– A new baby should always sleep on his/her back, not on his/her stomach. Put the baby in the bassinet on his back with nothing else in it (no blankets or pillows).

Some hospitals may recommend putting your baby in something called a “sleeping bag” before you bring him home, but we do not recommend using the sleeping bag because it can be dangerous.

– Once your baby has started to push up on his/her hands and knees (usually around 3 months), take the bassinet out of your room.

A bassinet should never go where you don’t have direct supervision – including an adult bed – which means you’ll need to use a different sleep space for naps and overnight sleep.

Remember: never put pillows or thick blankets in a bassinet, and make sure any fitted sheets are tight-fitting and appropriate for the mattress size (no thicker than 2 inches).

– Stop using the bassinet once your baby starts trying to climb out; this can be anywhere from 4 to 7 months old.

After this point, some pediatricians recommend transitioning your baby to a crib.

How to make sure that your baby is comfortable in the bassinet?

-Be sure that the base has levelers. These are small pads that will help you to balance the unit on an uneven floor.

If there aren’t any, it can cause a tipping hazard when your baby is in it.

-Make sure that your mattress fits the bassinet well. There shouldn’t be any gaps between them or anything else where your baby’s body could get caught up in during sleep times.

The last thing you want is for something like this to happen when they are too young to tell you about their discomfort! You certainly don’t want them pinched if they roll over into one of these spaces while sleeping in the bassinet, either.

-The bassinet should have a removable hood with mesh covering. This is useful for blocking out light when you want to get the baby to sleep in a dimmer room or even with their “do not disturb” sign up.

In addition, it also has a flip-out visor that will provide shade from sunburns and other sources of irritation, too.

-The inside of the bassinet should be made from soft fabrics that you can easily clean without putting too much effort into it.

While some have covers that need to be removed and washed in a machine with gentle cycles, others simply use zip off fabrics which are just as simple in terms of care requirements.
